Ranger Quest is a week-long Venturing event that will be held on August 8 through 13, 2011, at Scouter’s Mountain, in Portland, Oregon, and Evergreen Air & Space Museum, in McMinnville, Oregon. Ranger Quest is designed to provide Venturing Crews or individual Venturers the opportunity to work on or to complete Ranger Core Requirements or electives that will be offered in the event program. Any pre-work needed to complete a requirement or elective at the event will be identified in advance. And, opportunities will be provided at the event to sign up for follow-on activities to complete a requirement or elective, or to enjoy new-found skills.
Event fees are $240 for youth and $180 for adults that will include food, camping at Scouter’s Mountain and Evergreen Air & Space Museum, choice of tickets to two of three Evergreen activities (IMAX , water park or museum), and an Event T-Shirt. The cost for Wilderness First Aid Certification will be in addition to the registration fee. Adults will have the opportunity to participate in shooting sports, SCUBA, outdoor living history, and earn Wilderness First Aid Certification. Adults will also assist in moving their youth to offsite locations for program activities.
The Ranger Quest program will offer sessions on the following Ranger Core Requirements: Communications, Land Navigation, and Wilderness Survival. The program will offer sessions on the following Ranger electives: Cave Exploring, Mountain Biking, Fishing, Mountaineering, Outdoor Living History, Project COPE, Scuba, and Shooting Sports. The Ranger Quest program will also provide the opportunity to obtain Wilderness First Aid Certification for both youth and adults. Other activities that will be offered include , geocaching, flint knapping, water rescue with Sea Scouts, time to learn historic music and play using your own musical instrument, discount tickets to the Evergreen water park and IMAX and museum facilities, great food and good times.
The event will begin Monday August 8 with 7:30 am check-in at Scouter’s Mountain, and focus Monday and Tuesday on Project COPE and Wilderness First Aid. Outdoor Living History begins Monday afternoon through evening and will include a period Dutch oven dinner, and demonstrations. Late afternoon Tuesday, the Event will transition to Evergreen Air & Space Museum for an evening of communications, land navigation and music. Other Ranger requirements and electives will be offered from Wednesday through Friday including mountain biking, land navigation, communications, shooting sports, fishing and wilderness survival and an outdoor living history re-enactment. The event ends Saturday with an open house and displays, presentations or demonstrations by participants, followed by a luncheon.
Each registered participant will receive a monthly Ranger Quest 2011 newsletter that will provide more detail on the event program schedule, equipment and other requirements, pre-work for work on requirements or electives, and other information needed for participants to prepare for the event. Attendance will require completion of a BSA health form and full payment of registration fees. Once registered, participants will be asked for further information including health forms, shirt sizes, medical or food requirements and program activities where choices are available.
